Inspiration
The series [alabastros] explores an abstraction of this mineral, playing with the calm tension caused by the contrast between the randomness of fluid paint and the attempt to control the random.
The 22k gold cracks have a transcendent basis in sacred and symbolist tradition, referencing the practice of kintsugi, which repairs broken ceramics with gold, increasing their value. Part of the Wabi Sabi philosophy, focused on the beauty of imperfection, the scar, and the history reflected by the trace.
I seek the organic, rough, mineral, and authentic feeling that makes these works so emotionally close, like a sensory memory of places we have been.
The subtle shines of the paint crystals are elements of "infra-light" reality, a Duchampian concept that refers to beauty in fleetingness and transience. It is a momentary flash of higher reality, an instant we believe we capture and that has already escaped us, and that is incredibly beautiful.
